ParleSprint and Duolingo can both help someone build a French habit, but they are designed around different moments in the learning journey. Duolingo is strong at making short practice easy to start and easy to repeat. ParleSprint is built around connecting what you learn to what you can produce next: vocabulary, grammar, listening, writing, and guided speaking in one Daily Path.
The short answer
Choose Duolingo if you want a highly accessible, game-like course with bite-sized lessons and a broad set of practice modes. Choose ParleSprint if your priority is a guided French routine that moves from learning into original speaking, with a digital tutor named Marie and a pathway that remembers the work you have already done. Some learners may reasonably use both: Duolingo for extra repetition and ParleSprint for a more deliberate speaking loop.
What each app is trying to optimize
| Decision point | Duolingo | ParleSprint |
|---|---|---|
| Starting a session | A familiar, bite-sized lesson path with optional Practice tab activities. | A recommended Daily Path that explains what to practise next and why. |
| Vocabulary and review | Course vocabulary, words practice, and mistake review in the Practice tab. | Spaced review connected to the learner’s recent gaps and the next speaking task. |
| Speaking practice | Speaking exercises, listen-and-respond activities, and conversation tools on eligible plans or courses. | Directed roleplay with Marie, original responses, corrections, and a next attempt inside the same learning loop. |
| Skill connection | Reading, listening, speaking, and writing activities distributed through the course experience. | Vocabulary, grammar, listening, writing, and speaking are deliberately sequenced inside one daily session. |
| Canada and exam context | A general language course. Any immigration or exam decision still needs current official sources. | Everyday French first, then practice scenarios relevant to TEF and TCF Canada, without score or outcome guarantees. |
Where Duolingo is genuinely useful
Duolingo’s own descriptions of its Practice tab include focused listening, speaking, mistakes, stories, radio, and words activities. Its speaking overview also describes a progression from repeating phrases to dialogues and, for eligible learners, roleplay or video-call tools. That makes it a useful choice for lowering the barrier to daily contact with French.
Duolingo can be a good fit when…
- You want a short session you can start anywhere.
- You enjoy visible progress and game-like momentum.
- You want many small recognition and repetition exercises.
- You are building a first daily habit.
Add a speaking loop when…
- You can recognize a phrase but cannot build your own answer.
- You freeze when the prompt changes.
- You need feedback on a longer response.
- Your goal involves a real conversation or timed oral task.
Where ParleSprint is designed to differ
ParleSprint treats speaking as the destination of the lesson, not a separate feature to discover after the lesson is complete. A Daily Path can move through vocabulary, grammar, listening, writing, and speaking. The point is not to remove repetition. It is to make repetition answer a real need, then ask you to use the result in a new sentence or roleplay.
Which app fits your goal?
| Your goal | A sensible starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Build a five-minute habit | Duolingo or ParleSprint | The best first app is the one you will open consistently. |
| Learn basic words and patterns | Duolingo | Short recognition and repetition activities can make a beginner routine approachable. |
| Speak about work, plans, or daily life | ParleSprint | The pathway is built around turning lesson material into original responses. |
| Prepare relevant skills for TEF or TCF Canada | ParleSprint plus official test preparation | Use the app for structured practice, and verify test rules and scoring with official sources. |
| Keep both tools | Duolingo plus ParleSprint | Use one for extra repetition and one for guided production, without pretending they do the same job. |
A practical way to combine them
- Use one short Duolingo lesson to refresh a small set of words or patterns.
- Open ParleSprint and let the Daily Path connect that material to grammar, listening, writing, or speaking.
- Answer one original prompt with Marie and notice where you hesitate.
- Review only the gap that appeared, then say the answer again with one changed detail.

Je vais au marché samedi. Je vais au marché dimanche avec ma sœur. Pourquoi ? Parce que nous voulons cuisiner ensemble.
The honest conclusion
Duolingo is not a bad choice because it is different from ParleSprint. ParleSprint is not useful because it has a longer feature list. They are useful for different kinds of practice. If you want French to become something you can say under a little pressure, choose a routine that makes original speaking a normal part of the day.
