The point of this lesson
You do not need a whole verb chart to start speaking. Être, avoir, and aller appear everywhere, and a small set of forms lets you describe your real day with surprising range.
A useful rhythm
Read it. Notice it. Use it.
These verbs are worth learning as speaking tools, not as an abstract chart. Je suis fatigué, j’ai une question, and je vais au travail can all describe a normal morning.
The three jobs these verbs do
| Verb | Job | Starter sentence |
|---|---|---|
| être | say what something is or how you feel | Je suis prêt(e). |
| avoir | say what you have or what exists | J’ai une question. |
| aller | say where you go or what comes next | Je vais au travail. |
A compact present-tense table
| Person | Être | Avoir | Aller |
|---|---|---|---|
| je | je suis | j’ai | je vais |
| tu | tu es | tu as | tu vas |
| il / elle | il est / elle est | il a / elle a | il va / elle va |
| nous | nous sommes | nous avons | nous allons |
| vous | vous êtes | vous avez | vous allez |
| ils / elles | ils sont / elles sont | ils ont / elles ont | ils vont / elles vont |
Build useful sentences
Describe now
- Je suis au travail.
- J’ai faim.
- Je vais bien.
Add one useful detail
- Je suis au travail aujourd’hui.
- J’ai faim après le cours.
- Je vais bien, merci.
Notice how one small word expands the sentence. Add a time word, a place, or a reason. You are not trying to sound impressive; you are making the sentence more true.
A one-minute daily check-in
Speak · 60 seconds
Describe this moment using one sentence with each verb.
- Start with Je suis… and name your place or state.
- Continue with J’ai… and name one thing you have or need.
- Finish with Je vais… and say what happens next.
- Repeat the three sentences tomorrow with one changed detail.
Open a model answer
Je suis à la maison. J’ai une leçon de français. Je vais pratiquer pendant dix minutes.
If you only remember one thing, remember the three-part frame. It is a small daily routine that turns grammar into a conversation with yourself.
Keep the thread going
One lesson becomes useful when it connects to another small action.
