How to use it
tenir means “to hold”. It is an irregular verb, so the present-tense stems have to be learned, but the endings still follow the usual pattern. In the passé composé it takes avoir: j’ai tenu. The past participle is tenu. Future and conditional share one stem: je tiendrai / je tiendrais.
